philosophy Shear Splendor Shampoo Review

November 22, 2008 by Suzanne
Filed under Bath and Body, philosophy

philosopy shear splendor shampooI had forgotten that I had tried philosophy Shear Splendor Shampoo in the past and really liked it until I received a bottle in a recent philosophy shipment.  I have been using it for a few weeks now and am really happy with my hair after using it.

It has given me a lot of fullness and shine that I was not getting before,  I am first using Amazing Grace 3-in-1 as a clarifying shampoo – it makes a great clarifying shampoo and then following with Shear Splendor Shampoo.  I am not using the conditioner.  After I towel dry my hair, I use Wen as a leave in conditioner.

philosophy says this is an “anti-aging, bio-peptide, soy-based shampoo”.  There is also a conditioner, an oil and a serum.  It is geared more towards dry hair.  I don’t have dry hair, but this works great for me.  It does cost more than I like to spend for shampoo – but it just takes a small amount to make lots and lots of lather.

philosophy says the shampoo is for “people who crave added sheen, body and hydration for their hair chronically dry or aging hair” and “what peptides have done for your skin, they can now do for your hair. unique peptide combination helps improve the overall health of the hair follicle, ultimately repairing and restoring hair from deep within the hair shaft.”

Here is what the bottle says: “we dream of the perfect life, perfect health, the perfect relationship even perfect hair. in doing so we lose sight of the most perfect thing there is. we call it “the perfect plan”. it is the invisible energy life force that directs our every move, every triumph and every set back. it is a master plan that requires no perfection. once you surrender to the plan you genuinely see the perfection of God’s plan. and in sickness and in health you drop to your knees and say thank-you for every perfect note played in your life’s theme song. no matter what note is being played, we are required to dance.”

Here are the ingredients: Water (Aqua), Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, PPG 2 Hydroxyethyl Cocamide, Lauryl Betaine, Glycol Distearate, Acrylates Copolymer, Soy Amino Acids, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Fragrance (Parfum), Steareth 4, Methyl Gluceth 20, Phytantriol, Polyquaternium 10, Butylene Glycol, PPG 26 Buteth 26, PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Apigenin, Oleanolic Acid

philosophy Supernatural Concealer Review

August 24, 2008 by Suzanne
Filed under Makeup Reviews, Makeup Tips, Most Recent, philosophy

Philosophy Supernatural Concealer- Medium
I have been using Philosophy Supernatural Concealer for well over a year and I am of the opinion that it is the best concealer on the planet.  It is one of those few products that I start to get nervous if I am running low – I always keep an extra in my stash so that I won’t ever have to go without.

To me, the best thing about it is that it deposits opaque color that easily conceals without any texture at all – which means that it will conceal under-eye darkness without accentuating fine lines!

I use it in the Medium & I use the center color every day under my eyes.  It totally conceals any darkness and also slightly brightens the undereye area.  I use the color on the left (it has a slightly salmon-ly tint) to conceal any dark area on my face.  The color on the right is a perfect match to my skin color and is great for a little coverage.

I held off buying this for a long time because of the price – $25 for concealer seems like a lot to me – but I am so glad that I finally tried it.  Using it almost everyday one compact lasted almost a year, so it really turns out to be a good value.

The compact comes with a little brush, I don’t use it – I put it on with my finger.  (Use your ring finger to apply under your eyes – it is your “weakest finger” and puts the least amount of pressure on your delicate under-eye tissue.)

This concealer won a Self Magazine award for best concealer.  I never want to be without it and I recommend it – especially to women over 40 who want to conceal without accentualing fine lines and wrinkles.  It can also be used as an eyelid primer to help your eyemake up stay on longer.  Because of the amazing texture that imparts opaque color with no texture, it is good for dry skin (doesn’t dry out), oily skin (doesn’t get greasy)

QVC has no mercy on beauty addicts! On 4/14/07 there will be a philosophy Today’s Special Value and an entire day of philosophy. No word yet on what the TSV will be, but in the past the April TSV has always been a skincare set – (at an irrestible price!). Traditionally they have offered the philosophy TSV on auto-delivery – which is a great way to lock in the price and save some serious money if you are a philosophy girl.

I hope the philosophy TSV will include the new philosophy microdelivery peel treatment wash. It is getting rave reviews and I am eager to try it out!

Less than two weeks later, there will be a Bare Escentuals bareMinerals TSV on 4/27/07.

philosophy Hope In a Jar

March 21, 2007 by Suzanne

Speaking of products made famous by Oprah… OK, we weren’t really speaking of that, but she did make philosophy’s Amazing Grace famous after featuring it on the “Favorite Things” shows, twice I believe… philosophy’s hope in a jar is another such product. Oprah has spotlighted it twice as her favorite.

I can’t believe it took me so long to try philosophy. I guess I just figured it was all hype. I’m glad I finally tried it, there are many great products and they have made a big difference in my skin. I really love the way they smell too. Most products contain essential oils, so if you don’t like the smell of lavender and other essential oils you won’t like it. If you love it like I do, you’ll be in heaven!

Hope in a Jar is a moisturizer that also contains a bit of Lactic Acid (a mild AHA) for exfoliation. It does not contain SPF – so make sure if you use it for daytime you are using makeup or something over it with sun protection.

Treating Hyperpigmentation and Melasma

May 19, 2006 by Suzanne

Unfortunately, I am an expert on hyperpigmentation and melasma (dark spots or areas on the face). As a teen sun goddess living in the south, I had frequent and intense sun exposure (but did I ever look good in my white bikini, sigh).

When I turned 30, the damage started showing up as dark splotches, especially across my cheekbones and upper lip. When I was pregnant it got worse. I still have the discolorations, but they are significantly faded and I am able to cover them up with my mineral foundation.

Here is what I have learned is important to lighten up those dark spots:

Sun Protection is the single most important item. I have had the heartbreak of undoing years of lightening with one single sun exposure. It is so disheartening. Your sun protection should be used religiously, 365 days a year. I recommend a day cream with SPF and also a foundation with SPF, just to make sure you are protected.

My two favorite day creams are Philosophy When Hope Is Not Enough SPF 20 and Dr. Denese’s Day Cream with SPF.

I would recommend the philosophy day cream if you have oilier skin and Dr. Denese if your skin is normal to dry. Dr. Denese’s is pigmented and imparts a slight color and a matte finish to the skin.

Philosophy When Hope Is Not Enough Cream SPF 20 - 2 oz

Exfoliation of the pigmented areas is very important. Exfoliation challenges skin and it stimulates healthy skin to “turn over” more rapidly. The damaged, pigmented cells cannot turn over as fast as healthy cells and the damaged cells are gradually replaced by healthy ones.

In fighting dark spots, you cannot over-exfoliate. Exfoliate these areas as much as you can without irritation. Your tolerance to exfoliation will increase over time – I now exfoliate twice a day.

The best exfoliants are microdermabrasion and AHAs (like glycolic or lactic acid). I recommend you use both methods.

For the AHAs, I really like to use the pads. They are so easy to use and are very effective. My two favorites are Dr. Denese’s 10% Glycolic Pads and Philosophy Microdelivery Peel Pads (Lactic Acid). I alternate between these two, I usually use one in the AM and the other in the PM.

Philosophy Microdelivery Peel Pads - 60 pads

I use a microdermabrasion treatment twice a week. My two favorites are Philosophy Microdelivery Peel Kit and Mary Kay Microdermabrasion Set (you can always get a great deal on this on eBay).
Philosophy Microdelivery Peel Kit

Vitamin C – you know how lemon juice on apples keeps them from turning brown? It it the vitamin C that does this and it has the same effect on your skin. There are many, many vitamin C products on the market, but vitamin C is not stable when exposed to light or when mixed with some other items. I use and highly recommend Philosophy Hope & A Prayer Powder – it is pure vitamin C powder. You mix a tiny scoop (the scoop is included) into your day cream or serum. I like this because I know it is always fresh and I don’t have to add another cream or lotion to my regimen. This little bottle lasts and lasts. I use it every day and it lasts me over nine months.
Philosophy Hope & A Prayer Powder - .25 oz

If you have oily skin or break out easily, I would recommend Philosophy A Pigment Of Your Imagination Serum for hyperpigmentation and melasma or Philosophy A Pigment Of Your Imagination SPF 18. Philosophy A Pigment Of Your Imagination Serum - 1 oz

Erasing hyperpigmentation is a marathon, not a sprint. It took years to develop and it will not go away overnight. If you stay vigilant in your approach, it will eventually go away!
